I has spent over twenty four hours already on different airplanes. I had criss-crossed three different continents. I was travelling on the the lap between Dubai-Frankfurt and I decided to study and thereafter prepare for my subsequent meetings. The Lord began to speak to me not about the power of what we know but the power of what we don’t know – ignorance. Ignorance has power. Ignorance can kill. Ignorance is a vehicle of pain and sometimes even the perquisite to death if it thrives for too long.
As I was meditating on this, I remember the story of a beautiful girl that walked into the live of my family some 13 years ago. I still remember it like it
happened yesterday. This is a story that humbles me and teaches me that what we don’t know could be more powerful than what we already know. Not knowing it at the right time is as deadly as not knowing it at all. Her name was Helen. She was tall for her age and sweetly matured for her time. She was in her early teens. She was out of school and the father could not pay for her upkeep. She was to come and stay with my family and we would take over her upkeep while we decide what vocation she will learn. We had been waiting for her to arrive for a while. The father could not bring her as earlier scheduled because she had been sick. She had been in and out of the clinic ( so they said) for about 5 weeks. She arrived during the week filled with fun but she was obviously still weak. She took to our son like butter sticks to bread. She sings very well and she was very warm.
Sometime on Saturday I observed that her cognitive functions was hampered. Sometimes she missed instructions and skips lines of thought. I felt this girl still required to be taken care of. On Saturday evening, when every other person had gone to bed, I observed that some one was still awake cleaning the bathroom- this late? I checked and saw Helen cleaning the same spot over and over again like a robot in a repetitive manner. She did not move. She did not stop. She was in an animated state. I called – she did not hear! I literarily had to shake her out of the state and took her to bed.
In the morning on our way to church, I told my wife that I have fears about Helen’s well being. We agreed that we will take her back to her Dad, giving him our pledge to take care of her treatment expenses but we felt that it should be done under his watch and responsibility than from our place – Thank God we did! We did it that same Sunday afternoon. We also asked the Dad to bring her to the teaching Hospital on Monday. My wife will join to assist in making sure she gets proper treatment this time. Within minutes after they arrived at the Hospital, Helen collapsed and needed to be hooked to oxygen tanks to be kept alive. My wife thought it was a dream. This girl had hardly spent days in our lives filling our homes with life and her sweet spirit and now she is on the bed hanging on to life! Tests were conducted and results were meant for the next day. My wife left and came back the next day – Helen was dead!
We were shocked. She was still singing to our son 48 hours prior! The test results came and it was then that we could all put the bits and pieces together! For those five weeks before she was brought to us, the “clinic” they took her to was treating her continuously for malaria and Typhoid fever repeatedly! No one bothered to FIND OUT and INVESTIGATE what was really wrong with her – the underlying symptoms was never investigated. The test results at the teaching Hospital showed that she had CEREBROSPINAL MENINGITIS. No wonder she showed those symptoms. Now it’s late. Helen cannot be helped because of WRONG and IMPROPER DIAGNOSIS. Simply put she died because of Ignorance. How many things in our lives had been damaged or may be about to fail because of Ignorance- simply because we don’t know. Marriage disasters can be averted if the husband had known! If the wife had known! The spirit of delay would have been broken in the life of that single girl if she had known better earlier not to be prodigal with her beauty!
Deu 29:29 The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.
I believe there are some keys to deal with Ignorance and the Power of the unknown.
1. GET INFORMED
Pro 4:7 Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.
Ask questions. Seek to know. Why is my husband behaving like this? Don’t be gullible? Ask another husband. Ask for a man’s perspective to the issue. Don’t just stick to your women circle alone. Ask! Same applies to men. Ask other women! Why is my teenage daughter acting so differently? She used to be a sweet girl? Find out. Pursue Knowledge. Buy books. Read them. They help. You want to deal with your weight issues – buy fitness magazines and read. Break the power of the unknown by getting informed.
2. THE TRUTH WILL FREE YOU
Pro 23:23 Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.
The truth is a very strong and universal antibiotic that destroys Ignorance. Allow the drug to work. Seek information with an open heart. Throw the old wives fables away. Get rid of the myth. Stay with the facts- proven and tested.
Joh 8:32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you
3. ACT ON THE TRUTH
2Ki 6:8-10 Then the king of Syria warred against Israel, and took counsel with his servants, saying, In such and such a place shall be my camp. And the man of God sent unto the king of Israel, saying, Beware that thou pass not such a place; for thither the Syrians are come down. And the king of Israel sent to the place which the man of God told him and warned him of, and saved himself there, not once nor twice.
Save yourself. Save your home. Save your future – Act now! Obey! Cut off that foolish guy now! Cut off that mad girl you called your girlfriend now before she deliver an HIV gourmet into your destiny. Can’t you see that since he got into your life, every good thing that made you who you are left immediately. Offload all toxic relationship. No, we are not waiting till tomorrow – DO it now!
Luk 15:20 And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.
Never late to go back to the Lord and make peace. You can do it now. No – don’t switch off. Do it now. I am serious. Not tomorrow. Do it now.
4. DEVELOP A PASSION TO KNOW WHY ITS NOT WORKING
The King of Syria was frustrated but He did not give up. He wanted to know why his strategy was not working.
2Ki 6:11 Therefore the heart of the king of Syria was sore troubled for this thing; and he called his servants, and said unto them, Will ye not shew me which of us is for the king of Israel?
He got an answer.
2Ki 6:12 And one of his servants said, None, my lord, O king: but Elisha, the prophet that is in Israel, telleth the king of Israel the words that thou speakest in thy bedchamber.
Excuse me. If you don’t buy a ticket, you cannot win a lottery! If you don’t apply to college, you cannot get an admission. You must be passionate about the truth. Why do two guys with same background end up with different results. When David got to the battle front to give supplies to his brothers when Goliath was messing up with them, He went around asking for data – updates about Goliath, what he has been up to and what the king’s reward will be. He wanted the complete picture before He decided!
1 Sa 17:26 And David spake to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that killeth this Philistine, and taketh away the reproach from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?
The brother tried to shut him down . Guess what he did?
1Sa 17:29-30 And David said, What have I now done? Is there not a cause? And he turned from him toward another, and spake after the same manner: and the people answered him again after the former manner.
He moved to another. Don’t be limited by your immediate environment in your quest to break the power of Ignorance.
Develop a passion to know. Who are my? What kind of temperament do I have? What are my strengths and what am I weaknesses? One of the best books I have ever read in my life is Now, Discover Your Strengths by Marcus Buckingham and Donald O. Clifton
This book changed my thinking about me – evaluated me and since then I have made efforts to stay where my strength is.
5. REMEMBER THAT PEOPLE WHO MEAN WELL MAY BE WRONG
The fact that someone loves you does not guarantee that what He or she says is the truth! Double check the statements- Is it true?
When I was a teenager and I started having to deal with the challenges of shaving a very sensitive beard with terrible bumps, I needed solutions so badly. I got one from my grand mum. She is one of the few women that ever lived that I know cares deeply for me. She meant well! She saw the infected bumps and advised confidently that I should apply Kerosene (airplane fuel) and it will go! I did and I almost died. I developed a terribly infected sore on my face! She meant well but she was wrong!
Double check the data you are given. Ignorance has no senior brother, no relative and no acquaintance. People are defined by what they know! Expand and vet your circle of counsel.
Pro 11:14 Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.
Ever since the Helen episode, I always pay this Bonus prayer – “ Lord, the Bible says the Light shines in darkness and Darkness cannot comprehend/resist it- Anything in my life now that constitutes darkness (Ignorance) designed to cause pain to me, my purpose and destiny – Lord EXPOSE, EXPEL AND EXPUNGE in Jesus Name. The testimonies to this prayer points has always been shocking to say the least!

Amazing story and an eye opener, how often we come out defeated from battles we rae meant to win all because of ignorance. Jesus open my eyes to see both physically and spiritually.

Evangelist Bee, I thank God for your life and what God is doing through you. You were in my church for Night Vigil (RCCG Christ Church Parish)and i prayed that I will have testimonies concerning 2 matters. I have one now that a cough of 3 months has been healed and is no more. Praise be to the Lord and thanks. i will soon write you a testimony on the second one in Jesus name before the end of this month.

Talking about ignorance and its deadly consequences… Do we all know that many of us are eating ourselves into our graves? We need to learn about the value of fruits and vegetables around us and learn to eat propoerly- it might be the difference between life and death…. Just eating right can actually prevent cancer and other deadly diseases. May the Lord help us in Jesus' Name

Amen and thank you for that insight. I think " not acting" is also a function of a "fatalistic" mindset we carry that says what "will be will be". This is a mindset from hell that allows ignorance to thrive.

I love the prayer point am going to start using it. Thank you for sharing your words with us. It is always an eye opener. I also read the comment about "what will be, will be" I must admit I have used that statement so many times, now am changing my mindset to "God's will for my life will come to pass."
